The Oxford Connection

It’s the Oxford connection… In one of those ‘not really that much of a coincidence when you think about it’ moments, these two new arrivals dropped through the letter box within a couple of days of each other. One is the new set by the very excellent Les Clochards whilst the other is the fabulous new record by the marvellous Relationships. Both are very much worthy of your attention. There will be a couple of cuts cropping up on the first Unpopular mix for April but if you can’t wait, here are the leading contenders:

Wilder 

‘Wilder’ was one of thee important records of my youth. So much so that my bedroom came to be known as The Culture Bunker. Though how accurate that was heaven only knows.

Listening to the reissued set inevitably brings back a lot of memories. You don’t want to know about those, but they’ll be same as yours regardless of time and context: Unrequited love. Eyes that misted in the sunlight. Missed kisses that bled in the moonlight. Bluebells and Babycham. Whisky and cigarettes.

Who’d be a teenager?

Bob Stanley wrote a good piece about this reissue for the Croydon Municipal. I don’t agree with his assertion that Side One is patchy, but hey…

Speaking of memories, I took a trawl through the Tangential archive and found a few references to Cope, The Teardrop Explodes and the Crucial Three that made me smile to read again. Maybe you’ll do the same:

Mentalettes, Spectrum and Soundcarriers

Spectrum and Soundcarriers 

The multicoloured octagon sleeve is the one hundredth release on Great Pop Supplement and contains a 7" featuring tracks by Spectrum, Spacemen 3 and MGMT. It's beautiful. Apparently it has now been 'officially' postponed until later this year due to 'contractual discussions' with Sony, so I guess I'm one of the lucky recipients of the copies that did get released into the wild. The other 7" is by the very fabulous Mentalettes who you may have caught on their recent tour.

The LP that looks like some 1970s 'Music For Pleasure' charity shop find is in fact the new long player by Soundcarriers on Great Pop Supplement. And a very fine listen it is too.

Diseases of England 

The third and final instalment of The Indelicates' 'Diseases of England' arrived recently. You may also have been one of the backers of the project, in which case you will also have received your three CD EPs and cardboard slip case. If you weren't a backer however, fear not, for you can pick up your copy of the whole album on on CD or slinky vinyl. Alternatively you can pick up the download from the Corporate Records site. It's ace.
