Of course you will know of the link between The Ocean Tango and The Clientele through Louis Philippe’s string arrangements for the 2005 ‘Strange Geometry’ album. Now whilst 2010 did not see a bona-fide full length from The Clientele, the ‘Minotaur’ mini-album was certainly no less a treasure. Indeed, at eight songs and close to a half hour in length ‘Minotaur’ could easily have passed for a ‘proper’ album in the days when Pop groups released two or three LPs a year and thought nothing of that at all…
One of the highlights of the set for me was the long-awaited appearance of ‘Jerry’ on record, complete with it’s Hellfire Sermons/Television stop/start/pause guitar attack. ‘Jerry’ was a song that was always going to sit strangely on any Clientele set and if it was going to work then for sure it was going to be on a short album like this. And I’m sure it’s no coincidence that elsewhere on ‘Minotaur’ sits a song called ‘Paul Verlaine’ with it's gorgeous line about everything cracking like porcelain.
It would be wrong to call either of those two songs highlights on this mini-album, however, because really it is a set of remarkable quality throughout, just as one would expect from The Clientele.
